I believe that the most important aspects in music to develop in young students are individuality, imagination and instinct. Another way of saying it is, understanding what music means to the student as an expressive and communicative medium. In order to realize this, there must be early development of piano technique including daily practicing of scales, arpeggious and exercises that build individual finger strength. At the same time, there will need to be an awareness of listening for the sounds and harmonies and encouraging students to respond emotionally to what they are hearing. From an early age, students should also learn to differentiate music from various styles such as Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, and music written throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Development of listening skills in terms of melodic shaping, tone production, rhythmic integrity, clapping rhythms, telling stories about pieces, and making the process fun and enjoyable in an atmosphere of support and positive energy is essential. As students get older they should read about composers lives and know about the historical times that they lived through. They should also listen to recordings of the great pianists in history such as Rubenstein, Horowitz, Richter, and Serkin, and go to concerts of all types of genres such as symphonies and chamber music as well as piano recitals. As teachers, we need to give them age appropriate pieces that are appealing and expressively beautiful. The Sonatinas of Clementi, Kuhlau, and Beethoven, Bach's Anna Magdalena and 2-part Inventions, Bartok Microkosmos, and easier Chopin Preludes are a few of the tried and successful teaching pieces for many generations of piano students. Use of the pedal should be encouraged as soon as feasible so students can experiment with sound and how the pedal can give warmth, but also make the music muddy sounding if not used properly. I would also encourage that students sight-read a minimum of ten minutes a day and that teachers play duets with their students in this process--both prepared and sight-read. Practice methods should be encouraged from the earliest stages that include working in small sections, hands separately, starting from the middle of the piece, or by phrases at any point in the piece. Teachers need to make music enjoyable and fun to explore, and not be judgmental in the process. Everyone learns differently and at a different pace so comparisons should be avoided. Also, it is important to allow students to participate in the choice of the music that they study by being allowed to choose from several options. This is important because they will work harder on music that they like compared to those pieces they do not like. Students should have daily practice at the same time each day and it should be part of their life routine. And, they should be given one day a week that is free where they don't have to practice. Once a month, it is good to hold a class for all the students to come together and play for each other when their pieces are ready. A studio class. They should be encouraged to express how they felt playing and how they feel their performance went as well as some feedback from other students in a positive manner. We all learn from each other and the earlier a student can feel that they are all a part of the process and really start to listen to what is in the music and whether or not they are doing what they want to do with it, the better. Competitions can be encouraged, however understood that winning be deemphasized as in music it is a subjective decision. You compete only against your own best not another person. Music is not like math where there is a right or wrong answer. It also is not something that if you practice many hours you will be better than some else for that reason alone. Always remember, music must be fun and also a creative expression of each and every individual based on his or her experiences, desires, hopes and dreams. |
